Minimal Health Insurance Rocks

So, I've been fighting this bug for about 10 days now. My ears have been plugged, my mucus is blegh!, and I have been hacking up junk for just too long.

Steve and my mom have been telling me to see a doctor, but I kept brushing it off, waiting for my body to fight the infection. After a week and a half, clearly I wasn't getting better. So I bit the bullet and stopped by the local Urgent Care.

No, I did not call my "primary care physician." No, I did not call a busy doc office with the hope that they could "squeeze me in." No, I did not fill out any insurance information. And no, I will not receive a million different "statements" and bills from a million different people for this one visit. How is this possible? I recently converted to a high deductible, emergency-only insurance plan. No doctor's visits, no prescription coverage, no basic anything covered.

And I loved it.

For about $100, I was in, out, and had my hands full of good advice and a couple prescriptions.

I saved AT LEAST that much last month in insurance premiums.

Now, I don't have to worry about my insurance sending me eighteen statements about what is covered, what is not covered, why they won't cover this and that, and how much I will owe... blah, blah, blah. So much easier. And, in the end, so much cheaper.

And, since I paid cash upfront, I will receive NO BILL in the mail -- there will be no headache to deal with 6-8 weeks from now when I would be receiving said "bill" for a visit I couldn't even remember having.

All in all, I have never been so happy to spend $100.

Oh, and by the way... I've got two ear infections, a sinus infection with visible polyps, and severe allergies.

That sucks! Glad you got the easier way out! Now feel better!
Our PCP just moved far away. I have been needing to go to the doctor for a while now, but today I "bit the bullet" like you and went to a walk-in clinic. I was impressed with everything - got my prescription, everything, for $30! So nice. We just switched our insurance to something similar. I was nervous at first, but I feel very good about our decision now. =)
This post makes me green with envy as I currently receive an insurance statement everyday after having this babe. I may be calling you to hear more about this minimal insurance that you have. It sounds heavenly. I'm sorry about your sickness! It sounds awful. Hope you're feeling better!

Man, what insurance did you have before that sent you statements and bills like that? I pay a $25 co-pay for a sick visit and afterward I get 1 statement in the mail about it. Plus just this month all my blood work was covered 100% I am so THANKFUL for good Insurance!
