The Baby Lowe-down

Name: Steven Daniel Lowe III - "Danny"
Born: August 10, 2009 @ 8:22 am
Height: 20 1/2 inches
Weight: 7 lbs, 3 oz

I was in labor for about 11 1/2 hours. I labored without an epidural for about 5 (45 minutes of which was after the doctor broke my water, which was intense...)

Baby Danny/Buddy/Cutiepie cried right when his whole body came out - music to my ears. I cried. Steve cried. My mom was crying, I'm sure. I saw all the blood sloshing around and got a little woozy. The doctors had the NICU team in there with us because the baby passed a stool in the womb, so they had to immediately clean out his nose, mouth, and lungs. I was ok with that, because I was feeling a little out of it, and I could see that he was ok. After the doctor stitched everything up, I was able to hold my baby. I got to nurse him right after he was born. We are still learning that together :)

He slept almost all day in my recovery room with us. We kept trying to wake him up to eat, but he'd fall asleep every time he was next to my body. So cute.

Last night, for the sake of sanity and physical necessity, we decided to send him to the nursery. I kept putting it off... "10 more minutes... wait, 5 more minutes... ok, just a second..." When we finally called the nurse to come get him, she wheeled him out and I bawled. Haha. Five minutes later, I had Steve walk me to the nursery to check on him. I stared at him for as long as Steve would let me... then finally he talked me into coming back to the room and getting some sleep :(

Last night, I was in quite a bit of "discomfort". It was hard to sleep, but I did it with the help of many mild painkillers every couple hours. This morning, I woke up pretty early and couldn't sleep. Soooo.... I walked down to the nursery while Steve was sleeping to see if I could have my baby back. I couldn't because the pediatrician had to do his exam. It's been 40 minutes since I went down there :( Sad face.

Ok I just disappeared for like 45 minutes because the nurse brought Buddy back :) Happy face.

Anyway, I'm going to eat my awesome (uh, kind of) hospital breakfast.

So amazing! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the hospital stay. The caring nurses so willing to take your little one, to rock them and comfort them while you try to get used to the idea of having him in your life. I love the pain killers and the "honeymoon" feeling you feel having the love of your life and your new angel in one space. Enjoy it! Let the nurses help you! And ask for a lactation consultant if they have one! Good luck!

Congratulations! I found your blog on Alyssa's. I was at her baby shower and I think we were due at about the same time, I'm due on the 15th. So fun to hear your birth story, it makes me really excited. Your little boy is adorable!
I used to get sad/bawl when they'd take my babies away to the nursery, but just imagine being a nurse in there and getting to hold and rock and love BRAND new babies all night long. You know they're not lacking attention... and you need the sleep!

Thanks for sharing Becca. He is DARLING.

Becca- He is such a beautiful little baby! And you look AMAZING yourself... not fare! You DON'T look like you just delivered, but I'm glad you did! :) It's so fun to see new mommy's feel that love for the first time for their new little one- it's such a special moment. I'm so happy for you guys! I got to feed Cache right after he was born too, and was so glad I did, because afterward they took him down to do all the measurements and bathing and such and I didn't get to see him again for several HOURS! Alex was with him the whole time, of which I was so grateful, and yet jealous at the same time. After that I was determined to keep my baby in my room the rest of the time- it's hard to be away from those little guys, as you are well aware! Anyway, your experience has brought back a lot of my own memories. You look like a happy little family... and here's the beginning of a whole new life together- so fun! Congrats!
